Supersprint Rowing Machine Challenges 2000
Two indoor rowing events were held at the 2nd Supersprint Rowing Grand Prix on 14th October 2000.
A One-Minute Challenge entered by dozens of spectators was followed by an Internet Relay Challenge mirroring the Supersprint Rowing structure. Representing Britain the current British Universities Champions Nottingham University put forward a team of three men and two women, to race two American teams: Yale University and the University of Virginia, directly over the Internet in real time. Crowds of spectators surrounded the wired-up ergometer outside the Dorney Lake Boathouse, just after the end of water racing on 14th October 2000.
Each team had one rowing machine and the event was started with the first rower in each team on the machine. The competing teams saw a count-down to the start on screen and they started together. At each handover the next rower took hold of the handle while the machine was still running. The exhausted rower rolled off rapidly to one side, letting the next team-mate jump on. The new rower's feet can only be held in place by other members of the team - there is no time to use the footstraps. The five team members raced for one minute each with the changeovers completed in the first 10 seconds of each leg.
